Looking out at Singapore’s harbour, what sticks out is the huge collection of container ships waiting to dock. Since 2015, the city-state has been ranked as the world’s top maritime capital. The Port of Singapore is the world’s second busiest in terms of total shipping tonnage and its busiest in terms of transshipment. It not just a product of the country’s economic boom, but an economic necessity that makes Singapore a hub of international trade.
